Audi’s customer racing program includes a range of purpose-developed race cars for track driving enthusiasts such as the GT3 and GT4. Earlier this year they added the LMS GT2 to the line-up, which made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Now it is heading to the US for the first time, be introduced at the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering on Friday 16 during the Monterey Car Week, followed by an appearance the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca the following day, with a final showing at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on the Sunday.
The GT2 has been designed to take part in the new Grand Touring racing formula, which is due to be introduced in 2020, and its naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 has been tuned to develop 640hp, making it the most powerful customer car Audi Sport has ever offered. Of course, power is only one part of the GT2’s formidable package, and it also features an aggressive aero set-up as well as motorsport developed suspension and brake systems.
This new GT2 category will comprise of five rounds next year, namely the Virginia International Raceway, Sonoma Raceway, Road America, Watkins Glen and Indianapolis. In between these races, the GT2 will make for the ideal track day car and one that is sure to top the timing sheets at most such events. The R8 LMS GT2 is priced at $398,000 and is available to order now, deliveries are scheduled to start in January 2020.
