Michael Mann Archives: A state-of-the-art, interactive website offering unique access into the all-encompassing directing process of one of cinema’s most influential filmmakers, film director Michael Mann. And it starts with the movie that we all love: Ferrari

An unprecedented, intimate access

Michael Mann Archives – Ferrari offers unprecedented, intimate access into the creative process of one of cinema’s most influential directors. Mann’s cinema is often celebrated for its innovation and the depth of its characters.

For the user, the site immerses interactively into the breadth, scale, and detail of directing Ferrari. And does it from inside the director’s perspective. How actors become their characters. How to make a place and time come to life. And architecting the collision of emotionally powerful vectors in the storytelling.

A deeper look at the movie Ferrari, ideal for motor racing and cinema aficionado alike

The site is large. It includes 20 mini documentary videos. It also includes Michael Mann and his actors’ work from training and rehearsals through shooting. And many more: camera and art department strategies to impact drama. Also covered is the design and engineering of replica race cars, camera systems. The tragic crash at Guidizzolo, and much more.

At the same time, there are Mann’s annotated script pages, notes to himself on intent, his photo storyboards and captured audio – all of which provide an additional dimension.

“An absolute treat and an invaluable resource”

Edward Saxon, Producer (The Silence of the Lambs, Adaptation, Philadelphia) and Professor of Cinematic Arts at USC, calls the archives: “A unique, essential addition to film and filmmaking scholarship. Brilliant. Immersive. As close as you can get to understanding a filmmaker’s process, and the entire Michael Mann filmmaking process without being on set. It’s also tremendous fun.”

Criterion Senior Producer Curtis Tsui remarked: “I loved hearing Michael narrate about how he directed a scene while watching that scene play back, or hearing the breakdown of why La Traviata was so important while analyzing the construction of the scene. My favorite things were the paper elements, so all of that — the screenplay, the notes about scenes plus handwriting — is really special.”

New York Film Festival Artistic Director Dennis Lim said: “Michael Mann Archives is an absolute treat for the filmmaker’s many fans and for all cinephiles. It’s an invaluable resource, and an all too rare immersion in the intricacies of craft and process. Exploring the site, one truly apprehends both the vision and the labor behind Michael Mann’s work.”
