These New-Old-Stock Persols Are Why We Love Hodinkee’s New Store

Our dear pals at Hodinkee have just taken their retail experience up a notch. Where you once were only able to snag watch straps and a handful of accessories, you’ll now find some of the most exquisite examples of vintage time pieces and timeless automotive ephemera—much like these particular frames.

We’re big fans of classic sunglasses at Petrolicious, and while the current variety of shades on the market is astounding, sometimes it’s nice to find an item that’s a bit more special—like new-old-stock Persol 649s. What makes them different from Persols you’ll find in your local eyeglass store? “These are new-old-stock from the 1980s, meaning that the frames were produced by hand in Italy before Persol was acquired and moved toward mass production,” Hodinkee says.

“These still have the original case and tags, and just wear so well,” they add.

Head on over to Hodinkee’s new shop to take a peek.

We can talk whatever we want about overpriced sunglasses, but the fact that Pininfarina Persols have already been sold out tells a lot about the future of vintage sunglasses collecting.

Using the name of Steve McQueen to promote anything but 714s … wow.

Fun fact! McQueen wore many variants of the style, including the 649.

As Ted commented, he indeed did, but finding the photo to prove the claim is almost impossible.

Ahem Gentlemen …. after viewing the site … direct from the Department of Corrections ;

The Persol’s being promoted ARE NOT the Steve McQueen Persols . Those having Tortoise shell frames , mirrored lenses and by the way …. the Steve McQueen models [ both vintage and new ] are 714’s .. not 649s

And the price ? Seriously ? Would you like me to list at least 20 sources where the same can be had for 20\% or less of Hodinkee’s asking price ? Come on folks … get real ! Making a buck is one thing . Taking advantage of the uninformed is another … unless of course y’alls subscribing to the Trump school of business ethnics

And you subscribe to the Trump school of obnoxious behavior, as well as the Trump school of desperate and pathetic attention seeking

Yup ! Gotta love them vintage Persol’s .. though in all honesty the new ones have transitioned very well into semi [ Persol’s production numbers are still very limited in comparison to the rest of the sunglass world ] production * .

And though the lenses in the new ones are vastly superior to the old in each and every way …… ya gotta still love them vintage Persol’s . I sure as ( ___ ) do !

Now someone please dredge up a supply of them classic 70’s Vuarnet Blue White & Red Glaciers please … me wants a pair regardless of the lens quality !

* and unlike the rest of Luxottica’s holdings all Persols are still hand made in Italy with the same composite lenses only much improved in both resolution and UV/IF protection …. which is … err … the whole damn actual reason [ not fashion ] for wearing sunglasses !!!!!

Petrolicious shop and the Hodinkee shop are the new “boutiques” of the modern era. Love it.

” Petrolicious shop and the Hodinkee shop are the new “boutiques” of the modern era. Love it ”

Hyperbole [ and revisionist definitions ] at its wretched excess finest . Seriously Amir .. they’re both just fine … I dig em both … but neither are hardly ‘ Boutiques ‘ by any stretch of the word
