Although the word "retirement" was used commonly in the column inches about Alonso leaving F1 at the end of 2018, the man himself always stopped short of confirming that F1 was a closed book to him. Plus, following a four-year driving stint with McLaren, he has also since remained with the team in an ambassadorial and advisory role. It's been easier than usual to find a space for Alonso for this forthcoming test, as McLaren at the Sakhir track will in fact be running two cars. The second one, which Alonso will be driving, is a Pirelli-specific car to test tires. Race regulars Sainz and Lando Norris will share the driving duties of the more standard McLaren.
Whatever is the case with Alonso's F1 plans, it is clear that he cannot be kept away from sampling competition cars of all descriptions. He competes currently in the World Endurance Championship for Toyota, and further, in the week just passed, the restless Alonso tried out another prominent–and fearsome–motorsport machine, the Dakar Rally-winning Toyota Hilux.
He drove a 2019-spec Hilux–which won this year's Dakar in the hands of Nasser Al-Attiyah–in the Kalahari Desert, around 900km from Johannesburg. And even though it was an unfamiliar experience he didn't hold back in taking on the dunes. "It felt different, but interesting," Alonso said. "The car accepts a lot more punishment than I'm used to. We built the speed a little bit slowly, lap after lap, and getting more confident, especially the bumps, difficult to read, how high they are and how much speed you can carry. But the car feels great, very good grip, good balance, good power and braking as well, so everything feels amazing, so really happy. There has been definitely an evolution from myself from the very first run to now. The track also keeps changing, with the sun and the gravel, you make some grooves and you still need to adapt. So every run that we do is an improvement from myself and a new track that I discover, so it's never-ending learning."
