The Packard Motor Car Company was founded back in 1902 and targeted the top of the car market. When most cars of the era cost under $1000, Packards started at about $2600. Packard was known for being one of America’s first luxury car marques and eventually rose to worldwide popularity. In 1931 for instance, Japan’s Royal Family bought ten Packards because the brand’s reputation was so strong. Packard survived America’s Great Depression and World War II but didn’t successfully re-invent itself for the post-war boom. Sadly, the Packard name was discontinued by then-parent company Studebaker-Packard in 1959.

Independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes are great features we all take for granted today, but back in 1938 they were high-tech and constituted premium ride quality. This four-door touring sedan could serve as a daily driver and has had necessary parts replaced. The nice thing about this car in particular is that it has never been restored, is mostly original, still looks great, and is a pre-war, luxury cruiser. As only 2478 Super Eights were produced in 1938 (who knows how many are still around?), it is a fairly rare car. Packards have a strong owners’ club and spare parts culture so it’s a genuine classic that mere mortals can afford to get into. You can feel safe and special driving this classic but not have to break the bank in the process.
