Why I Moved Across the Country with My ‘76 911s to Work for Petrolicious

Two and a half years ago in New York City, I started a publication for the Thrillist Media Group called Supercompressor, it was a passion project that incorporated just about everything in my life that I loved: cars, tech, gear, design, you name it—if it was something I liked, we covered it.

Leading up to that project, however, I’d spent just about every free moment I had reading sites like Petrolicious, Hodinkee (for my watch fix), and a handful of others. I was enamored with the way that people like our founder, Afshin Behnia, were able to pour their heart and soul into something that could be enjoyed by so many.

Petrolicious is a utopian idea, really: a clubhouse online for us all to geek out over the minutiae. Things like the subtle, almost intangible differences between Euro and non-Euro spec headlights. The catechismic importance of the Gulf livery. The bizarre beauty of the Lancia Stratos.

In many ways, I fell in love with the idea of Petrolicious long before Afshin and I ever spoke about what I believe it can become. And what will it become? How will we build a glorious offering to the car gods without compromising the quality that Petrolicious stands for? We just will, by giving you more of what we’re known for.

Over the coming months, as Petrolicious grows and expands, you’ll never find cheap tricks or click baity headlines backed up by shoddy images. You’ll never find bizarre, out of place advertisements for Canadian Viagra, or any of that crap. No, what you’re going to find is a slow and considerate expansion of everything that you’ve come to know and love from us. More heartfelt storytelling. Increasingly immersive images. World class filmmaking, and much more.

It’s a supreme (and almost surreal) honor to work alongside this team, and I can’t possibly express how excited I am to help move us forward.

Drive Tastefully,

Ted Gushue

Welcome to Petrolicious Ted,
Love this site!
I know your Mom and Dad well. Rode in your car a few times. Always loved it. Remember you and your broh as tots.
Best of luck and keep up the good work.

Congratulations you fortunate soul. Dream job. Hell, I was pumped to have my car featured in the “reader submissions” section. I can’t imagine what working there would be like. Best of luck to you. Can’t wait to see how much more awesome the brand gets. Now. How about some more pics of that ’76 911?

Welcome Ted,
We look forward to seeing what you bring to the site. Nice car!

Yeah Alex,
I second the Peter Egan idea. And if we could only bring back Brock Yates…I guess I’m kinda’ dating myself.

All I can say is jealous. Hope your tenure continues to bring good stuff to this site.

It’s OK, we already spotted the Euro headlights and martini livery. No need to literally bring them to our attention. We are a tough crowd, you will have to earn our compliments. Welcome and nice car by the way.

Welcome to California. In case you didn’t already know, 1976 and later require a smog inspection out here. Good luck passing.

Welcome to California! Indeed, I’m curious as to the outcome of your smog adventure. I believe 911’s delivered in CA for 1976 had thermal reactors, for which I don’t know if the visual inspection will be applied. Best of luck and do keep us posted.

Now if you could only snatch Peter Egan from R&T, we would all find peace.

Now all y’alls needing is to have the Auto/AudioAnarchist come on board with his never dull and almost always controversial ” Kafka , Cars and Coffee ” column … that’d be me by the way as if you hadn’t already guessed 😀

As for Mr Gushue .. welcome aboard .. and please .. don’t ever bow down to the wishes of the corporate world who once they’ve sunk their teeth into you will control you from top to bottom … or let the size of the site supercede the ability to maintain the quality as so many others elsewhere have done in the past

Honestly .. I can’t tell you how many sites I’ve dumped just in the last six months due to their either becoming blatant corporate shills – a market place masquerading as an information/entertainment site – or who’s content has become so banal and inane as to no longer be worth opening … never mind reading .

Rock On – Drive On – Remain Calm [ despite it all ] and do please Carry On

GTR -aka TJ – aka the Audio/AutoAnarchist [ in the spirit of LJK Setright and Hunter S. Thompson ]
