The ’80s is often referred to as the decade of excess but the sheer number of tuners out there these days who are willing to turn your vehicle into a rolling parody of itself may have people wondering if the ‘decade of excess’ mantle should be assigned to the 2010s instead.

Well, we have uncovered something that will once-and-for-all stop the doubters in their tracks. It is called the Mercedes-Benz Autosalon 2000 Super Sport and it represents the full extent of 1980s madness. The creation you see here started off life as a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC, the pinnacle of German engineering excellence at the time. Its owner clearly wanted more though and it was soon given a period conversion by Autosalon 2000 of Miami, Florida.

Let’s start with the exterior changes first: they consist of a metal widebody kit, 16-inch Ronal Racing wheels and white paint on practically every surface including the horizontal grille slats, alloy wheels and bumpers front and rear. While the 5.6-liter V8 engine remains stock, would-be challengers will hopefully be discouraged by the 1000 SEL badge on the trunk.

The interior was done by Carat by Duchatelet and it shows. The graphics on the cockpit instruments are finished in a unique blue font on a white background and the white theme continues throughout with the seats, door cards and steering-wheel all covered in white leather. Wood inlays and blue carpeting give some relief to the eyes as does the strip of blue suede across the top of the dashboard which must surely help reduce the glare of the Miami sun on the windscreen.

In-car entertainment is taken care of by a “state-of-the-art” aftermarket front-loading Kenwood CD player but while there may be precious little modern tech in the Mercedes-Benz Autosalon 2000 Super Sport, nothing will beat it for head-turning value as you cruise down the boulevard on a Friday night.

We aren’t sure if the modifications carried out were dealer approved, unless of course, that dealer was the kind you find hanging around street corners at nightclubs, but with just 16,308-miles registered on that bespoke odometer this car is still in stunning condition. It should easily fetch its top estimate of $70,000 at the RM Sotheby’s Auburn Fall auction taking place between 29 August and 1 September.
