Experimental: The Last True Shelby

by Kris Clewell -

Is this the last true Shelby car? After the 1989 CSX-VNT, Shelby Automobiles never built another production car at their facility. Only Cobra replicas. First variable nozzle turbo in a production car. Twenty years before Porsche. First carbon composite wheels in production. Number 001 of 500. Carroll Shelby kept it for himself.

When Shelby died in 2012, his family dispersed his entire personal collection. Alex Leventhal bought number 001. He's a curator at the Streetlight Collection. "This car is not about the car," he says. "This car is about the man who built it." 7,000 of its 8,000 miles driven by Carroll Shelby himself.
