Tortoise Trophy: A Well Raced '84 VW GTI

Travis Washay bought this 1983 Volkswagen GTI during spring break of his freshman year of college. Theft recovery, no wheels, no front spoiler. He was buying and selling Volkswagens to cover tuition and fund his racing, and this one was supposed to be just another transaction.

The GTI invented the hot hatch in 1976. It gave a generation of drivers who couldn't afford a sports car something that drove like one. Travis built this one for SCCA competition, won the regional and National Tour championships in it, and drove his first laps at Lime Rock in it. He still has it, around 34 years later.
