Karmann Hairdresser: The One off Corrado Convertible

by Kris Clewell -

In the late eighties Volkswagen briefly pushed the Corrado beyond production reality, commissioning three coachbuilt design studies for the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. All three were shown, but only one is documented today. Built by SGS on a Karmann assembled chassis, the surviving Cabriolet carries a one off convertible system, Magnolia Connolly leather interior, and a custom blue flake finish that makes it feel more like a boutique European special than a Volkswagen prototype.

Its owner, Alex, is drawn to machines with stories rather than utility. A former steeplechase jockey, he calls cars like this “contemplate cars,” pieces that reward time and curiosity. The other two Corrado design studies have vanished, likely buried in Wolfsburg or lost with their coachbuilders, leaving this SGS Cabriolet as the lone trace of a moment when Volkswagen briefly allowed itself to aim higher than its segment.
