Fifty Three: Ralph's 1965 Volkswagen Baja Bug

by Kris Clewell -

When Ralph Guglielmi was twelve, his aunt told him the answer is always no unless you ask. She worked at the Library of Congress and traveled everywhere, from Antarctica to Africa, sending postcards from places nobody else thought to visit. It took him most of three decades to take the line seriously.

The result is a 1965 Volkswagen Baja Bug painted as Herbie, a shop in Santa Cruz called Rennvolks Garage, and a habit of cold-emailing his way into places he probably shouldn't be. The most recent of those was a starting grid on a frozen lake in Montana, in a 60-year-old air-cooled Beetle next to a field of hypercars.
