Metal Shaping Masterclass: A Week of Work at Runge Cars

by Kris Clewell -

Chris Runge spent five days teaching a young metalshaper and never once saw the kid's phone. That detail says more about what happens inside Runge Cars than any spec sheet could. Runge taught himself coachbuilding in a Minnesota barn with books, a homemade English wheel, and a found set of tools, because in 2010 there was nowhere to go and nobody to ask.

Fifteen years later a Piston Foundation scholar named Vincent Ramirez walked into his shop for a week of metalshaping training, and the thing Runge went looking for and never found finally existed, with him standing at the front of it. The story runs from a yellow 914 stored in a winter barn to a kid from Afton, Minnesota learning gas welding on a farm. Somewhere in there, a flat sheet of aluminum starts becoming a car.
