Keeping Brooklyn's Old Japanese Cars Alive

by Kris Clewell -

Car culture keeps drifting toward the photograph. The clean one parked in front of the right coffee shop, shot from the right angle, the car that barely runs but looks like it does. John Roman built Ground Level Garage on the opposite premise. Eight years deep in Greenpoint, working mostly alone on old Datsuns, Toyotas, and Land Cruisers, he cares about the doing and almost nothing about the display. The cars are all patina. He never polishes them. The style runs deep, Showa-era Japan filtered through the punk and hardcore he came up on, period-correct down to the dash tchotchkes nobody else will ever notice. None of it is for an audience. The way he sees it, you don't really own an old Z anyway. You're the steward, the one who learned how it runs and keeps it moving for whoever comes next.
