The Coastal Road: Proteus Jaguar D-Type

by Kris Clewell -

No roof. No windscreen on the passenger side. A long-stroke Jaguar six making around 300 horsepower in a car that weighs about what a '71 911 weighs. The D-type replica lives at Beeline in Santa Cruz, where Nic Cuarta keeps it sorted for its owner. Headers sit in front of the passenger's knees. The exhaust exits on that side too.

Highway One with the fog coming in off the Pacific, then a right turn into the redwoods on a road a lane and a half wide. Intake roar and backfires on the overrun. "You're behind a sport bike windscreen," Nic says. "It's motorcycle loud. You're in the environment."
