I drive a 1985 535i converted to -is spec and love it. It’s my only car….with 370K it shows no signs of tiredness and has even started without issue in our recent -12F weather. One of my employees bought one after driving mine, and the proof of the superiority of ’80’s German engineering became apparent when someone in a Dodge SUV turned left right in front of him. In spite of a near 60MPH T-bone impact, my employee was able to unbelt himself, open the driver’s door and step out of the vehicle bruised, but unharmed. No airbags, either. He found a 1983 E28 533i to replace it.
Long live the E28!
Gads! This video is so hard to watch. Would someone please take that kid to a drivers DE day. His steering wheel discipline is horrible, and dad’s wasn’t much better with his one handed wheel and hang on to the shift lever thing. Mom had it right, but kept crossing the line. Cute story though. I love the family and the cars. Just wanted to slap some wrists.
Great video about a lovely car. I learned to drive 25 years ago in my father’s E28 518i and although it obviously lacked the horsepower of a 535i or M5, I still enjoyed it very much. I very rarely see one on the road nowadays here in Belgium and to find one in good condition is a real challenge. Thanks for bringing back some great memories Petrolicious. Keep it up!
Nice little family story with their BMWs.
I had a 535i E28 many years ago and I loved that car. I like that it went like the clappers but was understated, discreet almost. Had to sell it when I went to work overseas. Interesting that one family have gone not just for BMW, but one series, unlike my own family, who have 4 Lancias between us but of different models.
Bravo, bravo! Great story of family bonding woven with automotive enthusiasm. Totally agree that requiring a young driver to buy their own car instills a much stronger sense of care and responsibility when driving it (ask me how I know).
I’m biased as a long time E28 owner, but I’d still appreciate this story if I wasn’t.
